Canada Comes From Behind to Win Semi-finals Against England 10-7

Aug. 09, 2019

Peterborough, ON—It was a nerve-racking game against England as Canada played in the semi-final game tonight at the 2019 Women’s Lacrosse U19 World Championship. This means Canada will advance to the gold medal game against the USA on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET.

Canada led the game with 2-0 against England in the first quarter, and England responded with two goals to tie the game. In the second quarter, England pulled ahead by two points, and the quarter finished with 5-4 for England. Quarter three saw England leading 7-5.

In the fourth quarter, Canada got into a rhythm, with Kylea Dobson closing the gap to 7-6 and Raegan Wilson tying the game 7-7. Shonly Wallace scored three more goals, securing Canada’s win 10-7.

“It was a thriller. It was a great lacrosse game. We were lucky enough that when things weren’t falling the right way for us, we kept the game close,” said Scott Teeter, head coach for Team Canada. “We got into the rhythm in the fourth quarter and we finished our shots. Their goalie played outstanding all game, but made some good saves early on. It’s a wake-up call for us that it could have been England moving forward but we made enough plays in the end.”

The crowd that came out was huge for both Canada and England. Cheering matches between the fans were so loud the announcer could not be heard at times.

Shonly Wallace scored the final three goals for Canada, pulling away from a tied game with England.

“It was the team and we really worked together,” said Shonly Wallace. “We battled hard and we realized we had to get this done if we wanted to be in the gold medal game on Saturday. I think we had great composure and we ended up coming through. It was the team who scored those goals and I happened to be the one to get them in at the end.”

Team Canada’s next and final game is Saturday at 3 p.m. ET against the USA. This game will determine the gold medalists for the 2019 Women’s Lacrosse U19 World Championship.

“Saturday will be two of the top teams battling for the gold medal. It’s a rematch from 2015 and it’s going to be a great lacrosse game,” said coach Teeter.

Canada is the defending gold medal champions from 2015. They are working hard to defend their championship title.
