Canada and Australia Play Strong Defensive Game

Aug. 03, 2019

Peterborough, ON—Team Canada played their second game tonight at the 2019 Women’s Lacrosse U19 World Championship. It was an exciting game with tough defence on both sides. Canada finished the game with a 7-5 win over Australia.

Shonly Wallace had a strong game, scoring three impressive goals for Canada. Raegan Wilson, Charlotte Smith and Kylea Dobson also scored goals throughout the game that lead to Canada’s win.

“I thought our defence and Cass played outstanding. They are the ones who won us this game tonight,” said Scott Teeter, head coach of Team Canada. “We struggled offensively with our sets. I thought our offence carried us last night, and our defence carried us tonight.” “

“Hats up to the Aussies, they put up a pretty good wall that we had trouble breaking. We made enough plays and our offence started to fire up.”

Canada played Australia in an exhibition game on July 31. It was a close game, back and forth between the teams, which carried over in tonight’s game. There were big cheering squads for both Canada and Australia at the 5 p.m. game.

“I think that we showed a lot of fight that game on all sides of the field,” said Cassidy Eckert, goalie for Team Canada. At the end of the game, Eckert was awarded as Player of the Game. “Winning player of the game gives me confidence to step up in the big games coming up.”

A big game is coming up tomorrow against the USA. It will be Canada’s third consecutive game, and it will determine the first seed and second seed in Pool A.

“Tomorrow is going to be an intense game. It’s for number one in the A Pool, so it’s going to be a one-two battle. The game will dictate how both teams will react,” said coach Teeter.
