Lacrosse Canada Announces New Gender Equity Committee

OTTAWA, ON—At the 2021 Annual Meeting, the Member Associations of Lacrosse Canada ratified the terms for a new committee, focused on increasing gender equity and diversity in Canadian lacrosse.

The committee, which has been meeting since June of 2021, will work to make lacrosse a more inclusive space for participants, coaches, and officials of all gender identities. They are currently developing a survey to be disseminated to members of the lacrosse community across the country, which will map the current state of gender equity in the sport in order to inform future initiatives.

Additionally, the committee is compiling available resources in order to make them more accessible to MAs and others.

Chair Donna Goguen, of Lacrosse Nova Scotia, is confident this committee will create actionable change to move the sport forward for years to come.

“The growth of lacrosse participation in Canada will directly benefit from the work of this Committee, as Lacrosse Canada provides more opportunities for diverse participation and achieving gender equity is the first step,” she said. “Our main goal is to help educate, provide resources and identify best practices for programs that can be used by all in our Member Associations.”

The committee is currently comprised of members from 8 Member Associations, including:

  • BCLA: Cian Dabrowski, Michelle Bowyer, Savanna Smith, Naomi Walser
  • ALA: Eve Hritzuk
  • SLA: Bridget Pottle
  • OLA: Tyra Prince, Sue Finnen
  • FCQ: Mary James
  • LNS: Donna Goguen, Deb Muise
  • LPEI: Samantha Branstrom
  • LNB: Nancy Huckla
  • LC BOD: Tami Rayner, Paul Magnan

Over the next year, Lacrosse Canada will profile various members of the committee, sharing their knowledge and expertise with the greater community.

Lacrosse Canada will continue to share updates and resources from the committee as they become available.
