Ottawa, ON—Lacrosse Canada is thrilled to announce the athletes who will represent Canada at the 2022 World Lacrosse Men’s U21 World Championship from August 10-20 in Limerick, IRE.
Originally schedule for 2020, Canada will open the tournament on Wednesday, Aug 10, against the USA at 12 p.m. IST.
It will feature a record 23 teams and more than 500 athletes, making 2022 the largest junior-level world championship staged by World Lacrosse to date.
Canada will compete in Pool A, made up of the top ranked teams: USA, Australia, Haudenosaunee, and England. Canada looks to win its first gold in the tournament, after settling for silver at the 2016 championship, held in Coquitlam, BC.
It’s been a long journey for these athletes, who have contended with COVID-19 pandemic delays, the expansion of World Lacrosse age limits, and a number of training camps, including the most recent at the beginning of June in Langley, BC.
“After an amazing camp in Langley, BC, and a long process of evaluation through the past year, we have selected these 24 young men to represent Canada,” said head coach Matt Brown.
“There were lots of hard decisions when selecting a team like this. All involved throughout the process should be proud, as they represented themselves and Canada at their highest level. I’m excited for this group and looking forward to gathering in Toronto at The Hill Academy in August before heading over to Ireland.”
The team is stacked with NCAA talent, as the delay has allowed for players to get a few seasons of collegiate lacrosse under their belts. Matt Wright, defenseman at the University of North Carolina, is honoured for the opportunity.
“It’s a dream come true to put on the Canadian jersey and represent the country. I love to play with these guys, a lot of whom I grew up with, and our gritty style of play that Canadian teams always bring. I am super excited to be a part of this group,” Wright said.
Full event passes are available now, and the pool play schedule is below. For those who want to cheer Canada on from North America, games will be available on ESPN and TSN linearly. More information will be announced once available.
