Canada defeats Puerto Rico 17-6, in first round of bracket play

Jul. 05, 2022

Towson, MD—The Canadian Women’s National Team’s chemistry was on display in Tuesday’s game against World Championship newcomers Puerto Rico, resulting in a 17-6 win in the round of 16.

“We haven’t peaked yet,” said head coach Scott Teeter. “We’re getting better with every game, we made some mistakes today, but now we know, and we won’t make the same ones again.”

Erica Evans, who scored four goals off four shots, agrees.

“It was good to get out in front at the beginning,” said Erica Evans, one of the team captains. “There are a couple of things we need to figure out offensively and defensively, but ultimately we pulled through.”

There were seven other scorers: Hannah Morris (1 G, 1 A), Aurora Cordingley (3 G, 2 A), Nicole Perroni (1 G), Megan Kinna (2 G), Alie Jimerson (2 G), Annabel Child (2 G), Dana Dobbie (1 G), and defender Emily Boissonneault, who scored off a shovel shot.

Both goalies, Kam Halsall and Cassidy Eckert, saw playing time in the victory. Canada again dominated on the draw circle, winning 18 of 27.

Canada will face the Czech Republic, who defeated Germany on Tuesday, July 6 at 5 p.m. ET.
