Lacrosse Canada is excited to begin a 3 part series where we look at all the amazing female Canadian athletes in the NCAA. To start Women's history month we are looking at the athletes who currently compete at the division 1 level.
There are 117 schools that offer Division 1 women’s lacrosse in 16 conferences: AEC, AAC, ASC, Atlantic 10, ACC, Big East, Big South, Big Ten, CAA, Independents, Ivy League, MAAC, MPSF, Northeast Conference, Pac-12, Patriots League and Southern Conference.
The last 10 years has seen a rapid growth of Canadians going south of the border to compete at the NCAA level, as there is now 106 current athletes playing at the division 1 level.
Milana Zizakovic and Alex Matsuoka both come from Alberta and have already left their mark on their respective schools. Milana, a junior at Towson led the team in points last season with 41 goals and 15 assists which earned her First Team All CAA honors in 2023. Her work over the past two seasons earned Milana the role of captain for the current season. Meanwhile Alex plays on the complete opposite side of the country at Oregon. Most recently a member of Team Canada's Sixes team in Oshawa, she is a tough defender that has helped Oregon get off to a 3-0 start to the 2024 campaign. She also was named captain for the season while only being a junior, her leadership will play a big role for the Ducks in 2024.
Umass defender Jordan Dean just recently moved up to third all time in Umass history for draw controls. After recording 17 last week vs Holy Cross, she now sits at 226 draw controls for her career as only a junior. Her teammate and fellow Canadian Kassisdy Morris had a career day against Holy Cross as well, putting up a huge stateliness of 4 goals and 3 assists on her way to a 7 point afternoon.
Graduate student Nicole Perroni has had an unforgettable career up to date at Louisville, and is still adding to her already elite accolades. She has complied 111 goals and 18 assists in 57 games as a member of the Cardinals. In 2023 she was named to the Second Team all ACC, and her 50 goal season in 2022 landed her on the ICWLA All Region Second Team. She is joined by 3 other Canadian teammates in Louisville that all originate from the Durham Region in Ontario. Olivia Toll and Kylea Dobson are from Oshawa, ON, and Reese Whiteman is from Brooklin.
At the University of Colorado, two Canadians are helping the Buffs off to a great 3-1 start. Freshman Emily Dodd has started all 4 games to start her career compiling 5 points along the way. As just a freshman she will be a key contributor for the Buffs for years to come. Meanwhile grad student Eve Hritzuk transferred from defending National Champion Northwestern and has brought her experience immediately to this Colorado team. Eve is second on the team in goals with 11 in only 4 games. These two have gotten the Buffs to an early season ranking of 19, after the first 4 weeks.
St. Bonaventure leads the way with 9 Canadians on their roster. 7 of these athletes are from Ontario meanwhile the other two grew up in British Columbia. Canisius follows right behind with 8 Canadians, and the third spot goes to Lindenwood University in St Louis, who has 5 Canadians players on their team.
