2024 World Lacrosse Women's U20 Championship Preview

Aug. 15, 2024

For the first time since 2019, the Women’s U20 Field Lacrosse Championships will occur in Hong Kong, China this August with 20 teams competing. World Lacrosse has expanded to many Asian nations since the COVID-19 pandemic and this will mark the first time an Asian nation will host a World Lacrosse championship event.

For Canada, they have medaled five times in this event with their most recent finish being a silver medal in 2019 when Canada hosted the event in Peterborough, Ontario, and they won the gold back in 2015 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Three members on this year’s roster have already played in a World Championship, Lauren Black, Jillian McNaughton, and Lauren Spence. McNaughton is the only returning member from the U19 team back in 2019. She was named to the team as an alternate. She also joined Black and Spence, on Team Canada’s Senior Women’s team in 2022 where Canada won the silver medal in Baltimore, Maryland. These three women are looking to help lead Canada to a gold medal once again at thistournament.

Canada currently ranks 2nd in the world only behind the USA in the women’s U20 rankings. Canada has been placed in Group B which consists of Haudenosaunee, Korea, Chinese Taipei, and Wales. Canada’s first group stage game is Friday, August 16 against Wales at 8:00 PM local team, 8:00 AM EST and 5:00 AM PST.

Canada’s most anticipated group stage match will come on August 17 against Team Haudenosaunee. Being that they’ve only competed in the tournament three times and their highest finish was sixth place, they are looking to give Canada a run for a medal when they face off in the group stage. While Canada is the favourite to win the group, Haudenosaunee will certainly make things interesting.
