Canada falls short in Gold Medal Game

Aug. 24, 2024

Team Canada earned the silver medal at the 2024 World Lacrosse Women’s U20 Championship in Hong Kong.

The game started with Canada getting off to a slow start and being down by seven after the first quarter. The Canadian defense was a step behind a red-hot USA offence that averaged over 30 goals a game in all tournament matches.

Madison Taylor and Madison Alaimo had great outings for the USA. Taylor recorded a first-half hat-trick to give the USA a 12-2 lead at halftime while Avery Morton scored both of Canada’s goals in the half.

The second half would see USA get two quick ones before Morton recorded her hat trick to make it 14-3. Jami Macdonald would get on the score sheet for Canada after a great feed by Dacia Cordingley to give the red-and-white some excitement and momentum as they looked to claw their way back. Macdonald would add another to her goal total after she fired a shot top-left past USA goalkeeper Shea Dolce on a penalty shot that brought Canada to within ten.

Canada started the fourth quarter with a pretty passing play that finished with Macdonald getting her third of the game.

For Canada, this is the sixth time they’ve medaled at this tournament and their second consecutive silver medal.

The team came into the tournament having a brand-new group essentially after the program saw so much turnover due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but they put together a very strong squad and fell just short to a very tough and quick USA team.

Jami Macdonald, and Avery Morton were both named to the All-World Team for their outstanding performances.

Top performers for Canada:
Jami Macdonald—(25G 10A)
Lauren Black—(15G 13A)
Avery Morton—(19G 9A)

Lauren Spence—(47 Save%)
Beth Anderson—(74 Draw Win%)

Canada would like to thank all of their fans, friends, family and supporters throughout the tournament.
