The 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championships are 5 days away and Canada’s Women's are making their inaugural debut for the first time ever at this tournament.
World Lacrosse announced back in 2023 that women would be featured at the 2024 World Box Championships and Canada is looking to become the first ever team to win the gold medal.
Canada held their training camps and tryouts at the Canada Games Park Arena in St. Catharines, Ontario in July and finalized their roster down to 23 and seven alternates.
There will be 10 teams competing in the tournament and Canada is in Pool B with Australia, Ireland, Germany and Finland.
Being that this is the first time the world will see Women’s Box Lacrosse on the international stage, it is very hard to gauge how Canada will end the tournament.
The roster though is composed of many NCAA and veteran players.
Dana Dobbie has been the face of Canada’s Senior Women’s team for almost 20 years. She has won multiple Women’s Field Lacrosse Championships medals and was part of the Canada’s Women’s team at the 2022 Women’s Field Lacrosse Championships in Baltimore, Maryland. She also competed in the inaugural World Games Sixes in Birmingham, Alabama that same year. Dobbie has made history and been a trailblazer for many young women for almost two decades, and now she will get a chance to wear the maple leaf at the World Box Championships. She grew up playing the game in Fergus, Ont., before taking up field lacrosse and having an illustrious career. She will look to add one more medal to her collection, and hopefully it will be the first ever Women’s World Lacrosse Box Championships gold.
Look for Erica Evans, Brooklyn Walker-Welch, and Megan Kinna to play a big role in transition. All 3 of these athletes are tremendous on both sides of the ball, and can really change the game with their speed and talent. All 3 of these girls have a background playing box lacrosse, which will be a big advantage for Team Canada over the Championships. Expect to see all 3 of them at the top of tournament scoring all week.
Another name is Dacia Cordingley. Cordingley grew up in Orangeville, Ont. and has done well at the national and international level. Cordingley recently represented Canada at the 2024 U20 Women’s World Lacrosse Championships in Hong Kong where she earned a silver medal. She will be attending University of Massachusetts this year as a freshman and will look to bring her talent and offensive skills to a 10-time Atlantic 10 Champion school. Cordingley will be looked upon to provide skill and scoring up front for Canada.
Dylana Williams is a name Canada should get familiar with if they aren’t already. The University of Pittsburgh Panther—soon to be a University of Albany Great Dane—has been a valuable asset for Pittsburgh and will be a very important player when she heads to Albany. She recorded 23 points over three years at Pittsburgh and has represented Canada on the world stage when she earned a silver medal at the 2024 U20 Women’s World Lacrosse Championships in Hong Kong. Williams uses her high lacrosse IQ and quick footwork in the box game to elude defenders and score in big moments. Growing up in Whitby, Ont. Dylana recently finished her minor lacrosse career with a provincial gold medal for the fifth straight time-even though she was in Hong Kong-and was an offensive force. Williams finished with 25 points this past summer to help lead her Whitby Warriors team to the title.
This team is poised to win the gold medal and will look to do it when Women’s Box Lacrosse makes their inaugural debut on Friday, September 20. The first ever Women’s game will feature Team Canada against Finland at 10:45AM EST.
ESPN and TSN+ will be broadcasting the Women’s Quarterfinals, Semifinals and both medal matches. No Women’s Pool Play matches will be shown on ESPN or TSN+.
