Men's team moves to 2-0 in group play
It was another thrilling match between the five-time gold medalist and the five-time silver medallist.
Canada and Haudenosaunee have met in every final at this tournament, but this game in round robin play might have been the best one in their heated rivalry.
Canada got out to an extremely hot start, being up 7-0 after the first quarter. Ryan Smith recorded a hat trick in the opening 15 minutes to get the Canadian offence rolling, before being halted for almost 20 minutes of action.
Haudenosaunee would get two goals from Thomas Hoggarth in the second quarter to help them start to claw their way back into the game. Tehoka Nanticoke would get in on the scoring too. The first half ended on a four-goal run from the Haudenosaunee to be down 9-4.
In the third however, they would keep coming. Long-time Haudenosaunee National Team player Randy Staats got on the score sheet and Hoggarth and Nanticoke recorded their hat trick goals to be down 10-9 heading into the final quarter of play.
However, it would be the Canadians who would get the final say as they showed up when it mattered most to show why they are the five-time defending gold medalists at this tournament. After the Haudenosaunee tied it up at 10, Tanner Cook, Mitch de Snoo and Matt Gilray would ice the game. After Cook scored less than a minute after the game became tied, de Snoo put a shot past goalie Doug Jamieson to make it a two goal margin before Canada added one more to win 13-10.
Jeff Teat recorded one goal and eight points on the day, while Cook and Josh Byrne added three goals, respectively.
Starting goalie Dillion Ward was solid in the pipes, limiting the Haudenosaunee offence to 10 goals and posted a 78 SV% to earn the win.
Canada’s final round robin game will be against the host nation, U.S.A. on Tuesday, September 24 at 8:00PM EST.
