Canada Announces General Manager for Men's Field National Team Program

Mar. 11 - 2021

OTTAWA, ON - The Canadian Lacrosse Association (CLA) is excited to announce the appointment of Steve Govett as the National Team General Manager for Men's Field Lacrosse. Govett will oversee the operations of the Men's Field national team program until the conclusion of the current FIL World Championship quadrennial - the 2022 FIL Men's World Championship.

Govett is a well-known leader in lacrosse, where he has served as team manager for the Canadian men's field team in 2014 and general manager for the team in 2018. Under his leadership at the 2018 FIL Men's Field Lacrosse World Championship in Israel, the team came in second place after a close finals where the winning goal was scored in the last second.

“I am honored and humbled to be selected to lead in this position,” said Govett. “While the National Team program is focused on representing Canada at the highest level of our sport, I share in the passion of all of the coaches, staff and players in the program now and in the future to grow our great game of lacrosse.  I expect our program will continue the legacy of excellence at the international level. I look forward to serving.”

Since 2006, Govett has been involved with Canada's national lacrosse teams, and was a player for Team Canada in 1994 and 1998. His induction into the Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame in 2016 for his contributions as a builder in the sport of lacrosse was well deserved.

After playing for Radford University and the Philadelphia Wings, he became the Wing's general manager in 1998. Govett then moved on to the new franchise, Washington Power, as president and general manager. The team saw two winning seasons in 2001 and 2002 before the franchise relocated to Denver. As the president, general manager and governor of the Colorado Mammoth from 2002-2017, Govett led the team to playoffs during 14 out of the 15 seasons he was there.

Now Govett is president of the San Diego Seals, where he has been responsible for launching the National Lacrosse League's 11th franchise.

“Steve has done an outstanding job serving the CLA in the past as the General Manager in Israel,” said Jason Donville, Director of High Performance and International Relations with the Canadian Lacrosse Association. “We are truly excited to have him on board for the coming years as we look to recapture the gold medal in men's field.”
