OSHAWA, ON — July 2, 2025 — Lacrosse Canada is proud to announce the appointment of Hannah Lazare as the organization’s new Indigenous Director. A lifelong lacrosse advocate and community leader from Akwesasne, Hannah brings a wealth of experience in sport development, cultural education, and Indigenous governance to this national role.

Lazare has been a central figure in advancing Indigenous participation and leadership in lacrosse across Canada. She has served as a coach at various levels, including the 2022 Canada Summer Games, and played a key role in creating the first all-Indigenous girls’ lacrosse team to compete in the North American Invitational. Her work has focused on building inclusive, culturally grounded pathways for Indigenous youth in sport—work she plans to continue on a national scale.

“I’m excited to step into this position and help Lacrosse Canada deepen its relationship with Indigenous communities,” said Lazare. “Lacrosse is more than a sport, it’s a sacred game with deep meaning for our people. This role is an opportunity to support the reclamation of lacrosse and ensure that Indigenous voices are present and respected at every level of the game.”

As Indigenous Director, Lazare will help guide Lacrosse Canada’s efforts in reconciliation, policy development, and cultural education. Her work will support Indigenous athlete programming, build stronger partnerships with Indigenous nations and governing bodies, and inform strategies that honour the origins and spirit of the game.

“We are honoured to welcome Hannah to this important leadership position,” said Shawn Williams, President of Lacrosse Canada. “Her experience and vision will be invaluable as we continue to build a more inclusive, respectful, and representative lacrosse community in Canada.”

Lacrosse Canada acknowledges the deep roots of lacrosse in Indigenous cultures and remains committed to reconciliation through meaningful action. The appointment of an Indigenous Director is a significant step toward creating systems that reflect the values, history, and future of the game’s original stewards.
